Christianity is the religion based on the life and beliefs of Jesus Christ. It is one of the large world religions, and it includes many churches: Catholic, Orthodox, Protestant, and others. People who follow it are Christians. The English word names the whole religion, not one church. You use it in school, news, and serious talk about belief. Though actually, this is where Taiwan Chinese can : in everyday talk here, 基督教 often means Protestant churches only, while 天主教 is Catholic. English Christianity covers all of those together. If you hook the English word only to 基督教 with no note, you may think Catholics sit outside it. They do not.
組成Christian + -ity（一種體系、一種狀態）。中古英語借自古法語，再來自拉丁語 Chrīstiānitās；更早是希臘語 Χριστός（Christ，「受膏者」）+ 拉丁語 -anus（屬於）再加 -ity。近代英語改拼，好更靠近拉丁寫法。
