From Latin interrumpere: inter- ('between') + rumpere ('to break', as in rupture) — literally 'to break in between', which is still the modern picture.
拉丁文 interrumpere 由 inter-（在…之間）加 rumpere（破裂、折斷，同源於 rupture、erupt）組成，字面就是「從中間打破」——正好是現代這個「切進去、把連續的東西弄斷」的畫面。
