核心畫面

One way to hold indie: picture a small group of people making something with nobody above them. No big company paid for it and no big company decides what it should be. Every meaning on this page is that same picture seen from a different side - the way of working, the company, the thing they made, or the sound that came out of it.

From the word’s history

Indie is a shortening of independent plus the ending -ie. The supplied source adds that it has been used of popular music since the 1980s, and of cinema for some decades before that. Independent of the big companies is still the whole of the modern meaning.

來源資料說 indie 是把 independent 縮短,再加上 -ie 這個結尾。它從 1980 年代開始用在流行音樂上,用在電影上還要更早幾十年。所以今天的核心意思其實沒有跑掉:就是「不隸屬大公司」。

Three branches

形容詞:獨立做出來的

最貼著核心畫面的一族。它直接形容一件東西是怎麼被做出來的。

adjective · B2

Made or run by people working on their own, outside the few big companies that control an industry. It is used about music, films, games, books and shops, and often suggests a smaller, more personal way of doing things.

獨立製作的

名詞:做的人,跟做出來的東西

形容詞被拿來當名詞用。畫面沒變,只是把鏡頭從「怎麼做」移到「誰在做」和「做出了什麼」。

noun · C1

A small company that works on its own and is not owned by one of the big companies in its industry, most often a record company, but also a film studio, a game maker or a publisher.

獨立公司、獨立廠牌

名詞:這樣做出來的聲音

這一族離核心最遠。它已經不管誰發行了,只管聽起來像不像。所以一個簽在大公司底下的團,還是可以被說成 indie。

noun · C1

A kind of rock music, usually guitar-based and fairly soft rather than loud or angry, often mixed with electronic sounds. Used as the name of the style itself.

獨立搖滾(曲風)
