From Old French heroïque and Latin hērōicus, ultimately Greek hērōs (hero) — literally hero + -ic. Its earliest use was literary ("about heroes"), and only later widened to describe people and scale.
經古法語 heroïque 與拉丁語 hērōicus 而來，源頭是希臘語的 hērōs（英雄），字面就是 hero + -ic。值得注意的是這個字最早的用途是文學上的——指「關於英雄的（詩）」，後來才擴大成形容人的品格與尺度，所以「史詩」那個意思其實是老的，不是後來的比喻。
