核心畫面

Say the word slowly and you have already heard it: gur-gle. Picture something liquid squeezing through a narrow space — a stream between stones, rain in a downpipe, the last of the bath water going down the drain. The sound it makes is low, soft and made of small bubbles, one after another. Every use of the word is that same noise, heard through a different wall: a pipe, a baby's throat, or an empty stomach. And because English lets the noise be a thing as well as an action, the word works both as a verb and as a noun.

From the word’s history

The packet's Wiktionary note derives gurgle by back formation from Middle English gurguling, 'a rumbling in the belly', and links it to German gurgeln and Latin gurgulio, 'throat'. Both of those point at the same narrow passage the modern picture is built on.

來源資料說這個字是從中古英文 gurguling(肚子裡的咕嚕聲)逆推出來的,還跟德文 gurgeln 以及拉丁文 gurgulio(喉嚨)有關。喉嚨和肚子都是窄窄的通道,正好就是這個字現在畫面的來源。所以「水管」「喉嚨」「肚子」這三種用法,其實一直都在同一條線上。

水的咕嚕聲

這一組就是核心畫面本身:水在窄處流動,一邊流一邊冒泡。動詞講「水在這樣流」,名詞講「那個聲音」。

verb · B2

If water gurgles, it moves along making a soft low bubbling sound — a small stream running over stones, rain in a pipe, or water going down a drain.

(水)咕嚕咕嚕地流

喉嚨裡的咕嚕聲

喉嚨也是一條窄管子,所以發出來的是同一種低低的冒泡聲。差別是這一組多了一層情緒:英文用這個字的時候,通常代表那個人心情好。

verb · B2

If a baby gurgles, it makes a soft low happy sound in its throat.

(嬰兒)發出咕嚕聲

肚子裡的咕嚕聲(待確認的補充義)

肚子跟水管、喉嚨一樣,也是一條有液體和空氣在動的窄通道,所以聲音一模一樣。有趣的是,來源資料說這個字最早就是從「肚子裡的咕嚕聲」來的,所以這一支反而離字的老家最近。

verb · B2

If your stomach gurgles, it makes a low bubbling or rumbling noise, often when you are hungry or have just eaten.

(肚子)咕嚕叫
