You can think of guilty as 'the one who did the wrong thing, and so carries it'. Picture a finger pointing: this is the person responsible for the bad act. From that one idea — being the of a wrong — grow the hard legal version (proven to have broken the law), the inside feeling (the weight you carry knowing you did it), and the label for the ('the guilty party').
