From Middle English gilt, from Old English gylt 'guilt, sin, fault', of obscure origin.

源自古英文 gylt「罪、過錯」，更早來源不明。

You can think of it as the weight that settles on someone who knows they did wrong — heavy, private, and slow to lift. The same word also names the outside version of that: the finding that they really did it. So guilt covers both what a person feels and what a court decides.

可以想成：guilt 是做錯事之後壓在心上的那塊重量——你自己知道，而且那個知道不會馬上散掉。英文用同一個字講兩邊：裡面的那份重量，和外面認定的那件事實。法庭上問的不是你難不難過，而是事情究竟是不是你做的；兩邊都叫 guilt，只是一邊在心裡，一邊在紀錄上。
