verb · C1
To give a wish, a need, or a feeling such as curiosity exactly what it is asking for, so that it is satisfied.
Picture someone holding a hope: that the work mattered, that the news is good, that someone will finally tell them. Gratify is the moment that hope is answered and the person can let their shoulders down. The pleasure is quiet and settled rather than loud, which is why the word suits results and news, and why it sounds a little formal in everyday talk.
Wiktionary gives gratify from French gratifier, from Latin gratifico, which is gratus (pleasing) plus facio (to make). Making something pleasing for another person is exactly the quiet answering of a hope that the modern word describes.
