A way to hold it: the hand that would normally hold something back lets go. There is a want — for cake, for a child's demand, for something you are not supposed to do — and instead of saying no, someone allows it. The person letting go can be you (letting yourself have it) or someone else (letting another person have it), but the movement is always the same: a restraint that could have been applied, and wasn't.

From Latin 'indulgere' = to be kind or lenient to, to concede, to give free rein to. The Latin sense is already 'granting rather than restraining', which is exactly the modern picture of a check that is not applied.
