Picture the noisy box behind a hospital or on a building site that coughs into life when the lights go out, and keeps making electricity for as long as you feed it fuel. It does not store power the way a battery does — it produces power, continuously, out of something else. That box can be held as the picture inside 'generator': a source that keeps turning one thing into a steady supply of another. Everything else the word covers is that same source seen at a different size — a whole company instead of a machine, or a supply of something other than electricity.

When heating is dictated by the operation of a thermostat in the roof of the motor coach, engine idling speed is 600 r.p.m. instead of the normal 450 r.p.m. in order to produce a high enough generator voltage output at rest.
