A grid is a pattern of straight lines that cross each other, making squares — like the lines on graph paper, or the streets in a city laid out in blocks. You'll also hear 'the grid' used for the power grid — the network of wires and stations carrying electricity to homes and cities. On a map, a 'grid reference' uses numbers and letters from a grid to point to an exact spot.
