You can think of febrile as the adjective that belongs to fever. Picture a body running hot: the skin burns, the mind will not settle, nothing in the person is at rest. Everything the word does grows out of that one picture. Pointed at an illness, it says the fever is part of it. Pointed at a person, it says the fever is in them right now. Pointed at a crowd or a week or an imagination, it lends them the same restless heat.

Borrowed from Medieval Latin febrilis, from Latin febris 'fever'; by surface analysis febr- plus -ile, so the word is literally 'fever-ish' from its first day.
