The whole word grows from one picture: something running, flowing steadily in one direction — like the water of a river that keeps moving. From that flow come the moving streams of water, air, and electricity. And the adjective is the same flow seen as time: what is "running right now", the moment that is presently flowing past — i.e. happening now.
