elimination (total removal) · noun · C2
The complete taking away or destroying of something, so that none of it is left.
消除
One way to picture it: something is put outside the door and the door is shut — after elimination, it is simply not in here any more.
From Latin ēlīmināre, literally 'to put out of doors' — ē- (out) + līmen (threshold, doorway). The modern core image of putting something outside and closing the door is the original picture, almost unchanged.
līmen 這個字在英文裡還活著,就是 subliminal(閾下的,「在門檻之下」)的那個 limen。

elimination (competition defeat) · noun · C2
The defeat of a team or player in a competition, after which they cannot take part any more.
elimination (bodily waste) · noun · C2
The body's process of sending out waste and other substances it no longer needs.
