You can picture earth as the brown ground under your feet — the soil you stand on and that plants grow in. From that one handful of dirt the word spreads outward in scale: the whole solid land (not sea or sky), then the entire planet made of it, and even the idea of 'this world / everything that exists'. It also reaches down into the ground for the safety wire that runs to earth and the hole a fox digs to live in.
