Dispose comes from Latin disponere 'to put in order, arrange, distribute' (dis- 'apart' + ponere 'to put'), reaching English in the late 14th century as 'set in order, place'. That arranging sense is still alive in at one's disposal — something placed where you can use it — while the everyday 'get rid of' sense grew out of the same idea of dealing with a thing by putting it away.
dispose 來自拉丁文 disponere「排好、安置、分配」（dis-「分開」＋ ponere「放」），十四世紀末進入英文時的意思是「安放、排列」。這個「安放」的意思至今仍活在 at one's disposal 裡——東西被放到你伸手可及的地方，任你使用；而日常說的「處理掉」，則是從同一個想法長出來的：把一樣東西安置到它該去的地方，也就是送走它。
