on the defensive · noun · C2
If you are on the defensive, you are ready to protect yourself because you feel someone is criticizing or attacking you.
One way to hold it: standing with your shield up. You are not the one moving forward — your whole position is arranged around keeping something safe from an attack that is coming. English then applies that stance to a city wall, to a football team, and to a person in an argument who feels the attack even when nobody meant one.
