Under all the meanings of draft sits one motion: pulling or drawing something out. You draw a first version of writing out of your head, a government draws people out of the public into the army, a team draws players out of the colleges, a bank draws money out, beer is drawn out of a barrel, and a current of air is drawn through a room. Picture pulling something out of a larger source.
