One way to picture 'stream': water moving steadily along one channel — a small river slipping across the land, always in motion, always in the same direction. From that one picture of a continuous, directed flow the word spreads: any line of things or people pouring past one after another, the act of flowing itself (water, air, light, tears), things in that flow, and finally data flowing to you from the internet. The 'school stream' sense borrows the same idea — children sorted into separate channels.
