核心畫面

Think of two family lines as two lines drawn on paper, each one running straight down through the generations — one line of tough little local chickens, one line of big northern ones. To crossbreed is to let those two lines meet at a point and carry on as one. Whatever comes out of that meeting has both lines behind it, which is exactly why people do it: they want the toughness of one and the size of the other in the same bird. The verb is the crossing; the noun is the individual standing at the crossing point.

From the word’s history

The word is cross- plus breed: cross carries the idea of two things meeting and passing over each other, and breed is the producing of young, so the two parts together already say what the word means.

這個字是 cross-(交叉)加 breed(繁殖)。cross 本身就是「十字、交會」的意思,兩條線在一點上交過去;breed 是生下下一代。兩個零件拼起來,字面就已經是「交叉著繁殖」,跟核心畫面剛好對得上,不需要額外的故事。
