To hybridize two plants, or two animals, is to bring them together so a new kind is born. The new kind keeps some qualities from each parent — not a copy of one, but a bit of both. Farmers and scientists do this on purpose: one rice that fights disease, another that gives more grain, and the child plant gets a share of each. With animals the idea is the same, though people argue more about it. In careful science talk this is the proper verb for that work. Everyday English also stretches it: two styles of music hybridize, or two products hybridize. That looser use is common in newspapers and tech, but a biology teacher still means living things first. American spelling keeps the z: hybridize. British spelling often uses s: hybridise. Same word. The thing you get is a hybrid; hybridize is the action.
