A breeder is a person whose job is to mate animals, or to raise plants, so the next generation has the looks, health, or skills people want. Dog breeders, horse breeders, and plant breeders all do a version of this work. It is a job word, fairly neutral. It is not just someone who owns a pet; a breeder chooses the parents on purpose. In biology class you may also hear breeding for the process; the breeder is the person doing it. Everyday when you name the animal (a cat breeder), a little more formal in science (a plant breeder).
