A mongrel is a dog that is a mix of several breeds — not a pedigree, not one tidy kind. People also say a mixed-breed dog. In dog-show talk, mongrel can sound a little rough, as if the dog were 'lesser.' Though actually, many families love mongrels and say they are tough and sweet. The word can stretch to other mixed animals, and, , some people have used it as an insult for a person of mixed background. That use is ugly; do not pick it up. As an adjective, mongrel means mixed: a mongrel style, a mongrel language. The ending -rel is an old little piece that can make something sound small or low, so the word often carries a shrug, or worse. Informal, and the feeling depends on the speaker's face.
組成From Middle English mongrel: mong ('mixture') + -rel (a small/low ending). Mong goes back to Old English ġemang ('mingling'), the same root that gives modern among.
