Picture creation as bringing something into being that wasn't there a moment before — the root's oldest sense was even 'to make grow'. The word covers both the act of bringing-forth and the thing brought forth.

From the word’s history

From Latin creare 'to make, bring forth, produce'; De Vaan notes the older sense was 'to make grow'. The modern core keeps exactly this: bringing something into being.
