1. 1

Genesis is a rather serious, book-like word for the beginning of something — not just the first day, but the origin, the moment or process from which it grew. We say the genesis of an idea, the genesis of a war, the genesis of a company.

GenesisGenesis is是 a rather serious, book-like word一個相當嚴肅、書面感很重的字 for the beginning of something用來指一件事的開端 — not just the first day不只是第一天,but the origin而是起源,the moment or process from which it grew也就是它從中發展出來的那個時刻或過程。 We我們 say the genesis of an idea說 the genesis of an idea(一個想法的起源),the genesis of a war一場戰爭的起源,the genesis of a company一間公司的起源。

You would not use it for “the start of class” or “the beginning of the film”; that would sound too heavy. It belongs to writing, talks, and careful speech. In ordinary talk, beginning or origin will usually do; genesis adds a slow, slightly scientific or literary colour.

You你 would not use it for 'the start of class' or 'the beginning of the film'不會用它來說「上課的開始」或「電影的開頭」;that would sound too heavy那樣聽起來太沉重了。 It它 belongs to writing, talks, and careful speech屬於書面文章、演講和比較講究的說話場合。 In ordinary talk在日常對話裡,beginning or origin will usually do用 beginning 或 origin 通常就夠了;genesis adds a slow, slightly scientific or literary colourgenesis 則多了一點緩慢、帶點科學或文學色彩的味道。

Though actually, many students meet the word first as a name: Genesis, the first book of the Bible, which tells a story of how the world began. That name and this meaning are the same word — the book is called that because it is about a beginning.

Though actually不過其實,many students meet the word first as a name很多學生第一次接觸這個字是當作一個書名:Genesis《創世記》,the first book of the Bible聖經的第一卷書,which tells a story of how the world began講述世界是怎麼開始的。 That name and this meaning are the same word這個書名和這個意思其實是同一個字 — the book is called that因為這本書之所以叫這個名字 because it is about a beginning就是因為它講的是一個開端。

People also use Genesis as a proper name for a person, a band, or a car. Do not mix it up with genetics, which is about genes in living things; they sit near each other on the page, but they are not the same tool.

People人們 also use Genesis as a proper name也會把 Genesis 當成專有名詞來用 for a person指人名,a band樂團名,or a car或是車款名。 Do not mix it up with genetics不要跟 genetics 搞混,which is about genes in living things那是關於生物體內基因的學問;they sit near each other on the page這兩個字在字典頁面上位置很接近,but they are not the same tool但它們不是同一個工具。

組成Borrowed from Latin genesis (“birth, coming into being”), from Ancient Greek γένεσις (génesis, “origin, source, beginning”). Related to Greek γίγνομαι, “to be produced, to become.” Scholars also treat it as a distant doublet of kind, gens, and jati — same very old “birth” root, different paths into English.
