To recreate something is to make a thing from the past exist again, or to let people feel it again, often in a new form. A museum might recreate a 1950s living room. A film might recreate a famous night. It is not always a perfect copy; it can be a new making that still brings the old thing back. Writers sometimes put a , re-create, when they want to shout “create again.” Though actually, the same letters have another, older life: to recreate yourself is to rest and play, and that is where recreation (the park, the hobby) comes from. Same spelling, two lives. This entry is the “make the past live again” life. In class, if a student only knows recreation as “free-time fun,” they may hear recreate and think of sport. Kindly point them back to the scene or the feeling being made again.
