You can picture a long, narrow strip you move along: inside a building it is the passage with doors on both sides, where nobody stays — you only pass through on your way to a room. Two things about that strip carry over into the word's other uses: it is long and thin compared with what surrounds it, and it is where people are in transit rather than settled.
