You can picture landing as the moment something that was up in the air or out on the water finally meets solid ground — wheels touching the runway, boots onto a beach. From that moment the word also stretches to name the flat place where the coming-down ends: the piece of floor a flight of arrives at, the platform a boat pulls up to.
