A doorway is the opening you walk through to go in or out — the empty space where a door sits, not the door itself. You can stand in a doorway. A person or a box can block a doorway. Though actually, people stretch it a little: “in the doorway” often means right at that opening, half in and half out of the room. It is an ordinary everyday word, not formal and not slang. If you mean the wooden or metal thing that swings, say door. If you mean the tall sides, say or doorframe.
