You can picture concentration as everything being pulled in toward one single center point. Scattered things — grains, people, your attention, particles in water — get drawn together and packed tight at one spot instead of spread out. Whether it's a crowd, a chemical, or your mind, the same move is happening: gather it all to the middle.

From the word’s history

From con- (together) + centrum (center): to bring things to a common center. Every modern sense keeps that image of gathering toward one point; the 'focus the mind' sense (1860s) is that same move applied to your mental powers.
