Dispersal is the process of spreading things over a wide area, or sending them off in different directions. Police talk about crowd dispersal when they make a group break up and leave. talk about seed dispersal when plants send seeds away on wind, water, or animals. After a match or a meeting you may hear of the dispersal of the crowd — people going off their own ways. It is a fairly formal noun; in casual talk people often just say spread out or broke up. Though actually, dispersal names the process, not the stuff itself. Once everyone has gone, the dispersal is over. It is not disposal, which is throwing something away.
