Two things separated by only a small gap in space — you are standing just a short distance from the shop, almost touching it but not quite. Hold that small gap, then stop measuring it in metres: the same 'almost there, very little left to cross' picture stretches over time (near midnight), over numbers (near 100), over likeness (near identical), and over almost-events (a near miss).
