That ring is where the name comes from, and it is the test the picture rests on: ash is dull and powdery, clinker is hard and sounds like stone.
Wiktionary gives Dutch klinkaerd, later klinker, from klinken 'to ring, resound'. The material is named after the sound it makes when it is struck, which is exactly what separates it from ash.
