The hot liquid rock that comes out of a volcano and runs down its sides. When that liquid cools, it turns into hard rock, and people still call that rock lava. News reports talk of lava flows when a volcano . Children often learn the word early, because volcanoes are a favourite school topic. Though actually, a close cousin word is : is the same kind of hot rock while it is still under the ground; once it has come out, it is lava. Scientists are careful with that split; everyday talk sometimes blurs it.

組成From Italian, from Neapolitan and Sicilian lava, meaning lava and also a downpour that overflowed the streets. That is likely from Latin lābēs, “a fall, a collapse, a sinking of ground” (compare lābīna, “landslide”). An old idea that it comes from Latin lavāre “to wash” is now widely discredited, and a link to Arabic lāba “black volcanic rock” is probably not real either. Another idea ties the Romance words to Provençal lavo, lauvo “flat stone,” from a Celtic source, but that trail is obscure.
