An ember is a small piece of wood or coal that stays red and very hot after the flames have died. The fire looks finished, but the ember can still burn you, or start a new flame if wind or dry grass touches it. People say embers in the plural more often than the singular — the glowing bits in a fireplace or a . Writers also stretch it: the embers of a love, or the embers of a fight, means a little heat still left after the big fire has gone. That stretch is for stories and speeches. In the kitchen and the hills, it is still the hot bit of a dying fire.

組成From older English, itself from a Germanic pair of pieces, one of them tied to burning. English later put a b in the middle to make the word easier to say, after a vowel in the middle dropped out. That b was not there at the start.
