A flagstone is a big, flat, fairly smooth piece of stone that people lay on the ground to make a path, an outdoor sitting place, steps, or sometimes a floor in an old house. You walk on it. The top is usually a little rough, not shiny like a kitchen tile, and rain can make it dark and wet. Flag here is an old word for a flat piece of stone that splits off in sheets — it is not the flag you wave on a pole, though the two look the same on the page. Builders and garden people use the word a lot; in ordinary talk you more often just say stone path. A whole walk made this way is a flagstone path, or just flagstones.
