Picture a light that is on and shows outward. Cheerfulness is not just feeling good inside — it is brightness that other people can see and warm themselves at.

From the word’s history

cheer originally meant the face or countenance (Old French chiere); to be of good cheer was to have a bright face. The outward, visible quality is in the word from the start.

cheer 這個字最早指的是「臉、面容」(古法文 chiere),be of good cheer 原意就是「臉色是好的」。

Three branches

cheerfulness (happy mood) · adjective · C2

The quality of feeling happy at this time, or of acting so other people can see you are happy.

cheerfulness (bright quality) · adjective · C2

The bright, pleasant quality of a place, a colour, or a thing that makes people feel happy when they see it.

cheerfulness (willingness) · adjective · C2

A willing attitude that shows you will do whatever is needed, and that you do it happily, without complaining.
