    Glumness is the name of that quiet unhappy mood — the state of being glum. It is a real word, but a rather one. In ordinary talk people are much more likely to say someone looks glum, or is in a glum mood, than to speak of “his glumness.” When you do meet it, it is the heaviness itself, not a person: the glumness in a room after bad news, the glumness on a child’s face. Though actually, sadness is the everyday word covering more kinds of unhappiness; glumness is narrower, the shut-down, not-talking kind.
