Borrowed from French chagrin, sorrow, from Middle French chagrin, pain or affliction. The older source is uncertain; one line links it to Old French graigne, grief or resentment.
借自法文 chagrin（悲傷、苦惱），更早的中古法文形式指「痛苦、折磨」。再往上的來源並不確定，有一說跟古法文 graigne（怨、悲）有關。從這條線看得出來，英文把一個很大的「不痛快」收窄成了一種很具體的東西：事與願違的那種懊惱。
