caddy

noun, verb

核心畫面

Picture the person walking beside a with the whole bag of clubs on one shoulder. They are there for the player, all the way round: handing over the club that fits the shot, looking at the slope, keeping an eye on where the ball went. So this caddy is a role someone takes for a game, not a thing you own.

可以想成球場上走在球員旁邊、肩上扛著整袋球桿的那個人。整場他都在為球員做事:該用哪一支就遞哪一支,看坡度,盯著球飛到更多收起可以想成球場上走在球員旁邊、肩上扛著整袋球桿的那個人。整場他都在為球員做事:該用哪一支就遞哪一支,看坡度,盯著球飛到哪裡。所以這個 caddy 是有人擔任的一個角色,不是一件東西。

From the word’s history

The evidence records only that caddy here is a variant spelling of caddie. Nothing further about where caddie itself came from is in the evidence, so nothing further is claimed.

資料只記到一件事:這個 caddy 是 caddie 的另一種拼法。至於 caddie 本身更早的來源,資料裡沒有,所以這裡也不多說。

核心畫面

Picture a small box with a lid that you can lift in one hand. Things that would otherwise be loose live inside it, shut away from the air or sorted into their own little spaces, and you can pick the whole thing up and put it where you need it. That is the caddy: a container that keeps a set of things together and ready.

可以想成一個一手就提得起來的小盒子,而且有蓋子或有分格。本來會散落各處的東西都收在裡面,要嘛跟空氣隔開,要嘛各有各的更多收起可以想成一個一手就提得起來的小盒子,而且有蓋子或有分格。本來會散落各處的東西都收在裡面,要嘛跟空氣隔開,要嘛各有各的位置;需要的時候整個提著走。這就是 caddy 的畫面:一個把一組東西收好、隨時可用的小容器。

From the word’s history

The evidence gives this caddy as an alteration of catty, a unit of weight used in China of about one and a third pounds, borrowed through Malay kati from Tamil. That is a weight, not a box, so the step from the amount of tea to the tin that held it is a reasonable way to see it rather than something the evidence states.

資料記載這個 caddy 來自 catty,一個中國用的重量單位,大約一斤多一點,經由馬來語 kati 借自坦米爾語。那是重量,不是盒子。所以從「一斤茶」走到「裝茶的罐子」這一步,是一個合理的理解方式,資料本身並沒有這樣寫。

Wiktionary (kaikki dump, source_ref kaikki:3f6f69a190036ae4:613594425:9579): “An alteration of catty … borrowed from Malay kati … from Tamil கட்டி.”
