    A canister is a small container, usually shaped like a short tube, used to store or carry things safely - a canister of tea leaves, a gas canister for a camping stove, a film canister for old cameras. The word is also used for containers that release something under pressure, like a tear gas canister used by police, or an oxygen canister.
