verb · B2
To attack a place with heavy guns, bombs or shells, firing at it again and again over a long period of time.
One target, standing still, and a great many things sent at it from a distance, one after another after another. Nobody walks up close. The things keep arriving, and what makes it bombarding is not the first one but the fact that it does not stop.
Latin bombus meant a booming, buzzing sound. Middle French bombarde named a medieval siege cannon after the noise it made, and French bombarder meant to fire one. English took both the machine and the action.
