besiege 講的是軍隊把一座城或城堡整個圍住，切斷進出和補給，用時間逼裡面的人打開城門，而不是衝進去打。用了這個字，讀的人就知道這件事拖了很久，重點在「圍」不在「攻」。跟 attack（直接動手）比，besiege 是把對方困住、等他撐不下去。英文最常寫成被動：the city was besieged for a year。
