    When you do something apologetically, you show you are sorry — with your face, your voice, or a few extra words — especially because you feel guilty or a bit . It is the adverb from apologetic. A waiter who has kept you waiting may smile apologetically; a student who is late may speak apologetically. It is not formal, but it is a little careful: you hear it in stories and polite talk more than in quick chat, where people just say sorry. Though actually, it does not always mean a big apology. Sometimes it is only a small, awkward “I know this is a bother” feeling, not a confession of something grave.
