Picture standing in front of someone or something to keep harm off it — a shield raised, a wall held, a hand put up to ward off a blow. 'Defence' is that whole stance of protecting against attack. Everything else is the same stance applied to different fields: a country's army, words that protect a person being criticised, a courtroom, the guarded heart, the back line of a team.
