If you look or sound apologetic, you are showing that you are sorry — often a little guilty or . An apologetic smile, an apologetic tone, an apologetic email. It is the everyday adjective beside apologize and apology: not the sorry words themselves, but the face, voice, or manner that shows them. It can even feel a bit weak if someone is apologetic about a thing they ought to stand up for. Though actually, the oldest Greek sense was “speaking in defense,” and in universities you may still meet apologetics (a careful defense of a belief) and (someone who defends an idea). That scholarly cousin is not how most people use apologetic today. In ordinary English it means sorry.
組成From French apologétique, from Latin apologēticus, from Greek apologētikós, “fit for a defense,” from apologéomai, “to speak in defense.” In English it sits with apology.
