Via French analytique from Greek analusis, 'a loosening up, undoing' (ana- 'up' + luein 'to loosen') — the root picture is untying a knot into separate strands, which is still what an analytical mind or an analytical test does.
這個字和 analysis 同源，追到希臘文 analusis，意思是「鬆開、解開」（ana- 向上 + luein 解開）。原始畫面是把一個打結的東西解開成一條一條的線。這正好就是現代 analytical 在做的事：不管是腦袋裡拆問題，還是實驗室裡拆成分，都是把纏在一起的東西鬆開來看清楚。
