Analytic describes a careful, logical way of thinking or working that breaks a problem down into its parts to understand it — 'an analytic approach' means examining evidence piece by piece rather than just guessing or reacting emotionally. In everyday use, analytic and analytical mean almost the same thing and are often , though analytic shows up more in academic and technical writing (like philosophy's 'analytic philosophy' or psychology's 'analytic' as short for psychoanalytic).
