From Old French alier, from Latin alligāre 'to bind to' (ad- 'to' + ligāre 'to bind'). The same ligāre gives ligament and oblige. An ally is literally someone bound to you.
經古法文 alier 來自拉丁文 alligāre「綁上去」（ad-「向」＋ ligāre「綁」）。同一個 ligāre 也長出 ligament（韌帶）和 oblige（使負有義務）。所以 ally 字面上就是「被綁在你這邊的人」，而 allied 是「已經綁好了」的狀態——這條「綁」的線一路貫穿到「相關產業」那些用法：不是誰下令，是彼此扣在一起。
