Someone has just done something, and instead of describing it again you point back at it and say: the same, over here too. That is the picture in likewise. The word is built from like (similar) + wise in its old sense of 'way, manner' — the same -wise you see in or otherwise — so it literally means 'in a like manner'. It saves you from repeating the whole action.
